When you're not feeling yourself

Updated: Jun 22, 2021

Metaphorically and literally

Overview

This feeling can happen often or once in a while. Either way, it's a terrible feeling to experience. Feeling as if you're not yourself can induce anxiety and insecurity. In addition, this feeling also has many levels. For example, not feeling like yourself can refer to disassociation from reality, or underperformance/not doing your best. Either way, there are ways to help combat this crushing feeling.

Artistic Self-Expression

One way to combat this feeling is to express it outright. Even if you're not an artistic genius, expressing yourself through different art forms can help you feel more like yourself again. Self-expression is a way to get your emotions out without having to verbalize it if verbalizing would make you uncomfortable. It is a way to come to terms with your feelings on your own, which can help you understand yourself better.

Meditation

Meditation is a great way to overcome the feeling of disassociation from oneself. Meditation reduces stress, helps you emotionally, reduces anxiety, and it even helps you gather self-awareness. Meditation is a great way to overcome this feeling because it is a method that helps people understand themselves and the world around them better.

Toxicity Holds You Back

One of the most important things to help you feel yourself again is to let go of toxicity. If you have friends that don't appreciate you for you, it is easy to lose yourself by trying to be someone who fits their ideal mold of a friend. Or if you have parents that constantly berate you, it is easy to lose yourself by trying to be the perfect child. You need to remember that you are fine just the way you are. It is okay to make minor adjustments to your everyday routine (like cleaning your room or doing homework), but it's not okay to try to be someone else entirely. Don't lose yourself for someone who'll never appreciate you!
