What is PTSD?

Updated: Jan 18, 2021

Post-traumatic stress disorder is more common than you may think. In fact, over 3 million Americans are impacted by this mental disorder every year. But chances are, you may not know too much about it.

First off, where does PTSD come from? It could be just one traumatic event that triggers it, or it could be years and years of trauma building up. But there are also several other sources of PTSD.

Now that we've taken a look at what the causes may be, let's also take a look at the results and symptoms.

People do not always realize that they have this disorder when they do, but the best thing to do is reach out for help. This could include going to trusted family members, friends, teachers, and any other people who you know can support you and get you real help if you are unsure about what to do. In extreme cases, therapy may be necessary from professionals.

However, in many cases, PTSD does not last forever, and with the right help, it is something that can be overcome. But this isn't a something trivial. If you see yourself in a position such as this, do not hesitate to get help right away, or if you see your friend or family member in this position, make sure you get them the support they need to overcome this mental health obstacle to avoid the PTSD from worsening.
