This entire series has been about the importance of self-love and your mental health, and now I’m going to tell you what happens when you don’t love yourself. It can be so easy to pick yourself apart, to pick out your flaws, to wish things were different. It can be so easy to wish you were another person and not living in the body that you are in now. It can be hard to love yourself when you have nothing to give. But you have to try.
You have one life. You get to choose how you spend it. You can choose to spend everyday negatively hating your body, your mind, and your soul, or you can choose to uplift not only those around you but also yourself. Treat yourself the way you treat your best friend! I can’t stress the importance of self-love enough. In order to love someone else, you have to love yourself first.
The Dangers
When you spend endless days wishing you were different and wishing you weren’t you, you sink into a hole of sadness. The deeper you fall in, the harder it is to climb out. Don’t let yourself fall into that hole. When you don’t love yourself, it is oftentimes easier to develop mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and more. These are serious topics and serious disorders that can haunt you forever. And it oftentimes stems from unhappiness from oneself. It is so easy to wish you had a different life, but you only have one so live it.
POEM by Makayla Cheng
The Girl looks back at herself
In the mirror
Hating what she sees
Wishing she could look like
The other girls
The Girl spends her nights
Crying, wishing for something
More,
Different
The Girl doesn’t
Love herself
Never has
Feels like she never will
The Girl stops
Takes a looks around her
Sucks up her tears
And dries her cheeks
She smiles at herself
In the mirror
Determined to love
Herself again
Day by day
Week by week
The Girl
Loves herself again.
