The Importance of Creativity

What is creativity?

Creativity is defined as the act of creating something new, whether it is intangible or not. Humans have been creative since the beginning of time. From the invention of farming to the invention of planes, humans have discovered a multitude of ways to better society through their creative minds. Things like folktales, storytelling, literature, art, and music are examples of how creativity is ingrained in every single culture across the globe. Because we are all inherently unique, we can all be creative in different ways. Despite the fundamental similarities of our minds, we still think and process information differently. What makes creativity so important is that it helps us foster a better community for ourselves and others through being exactly who we are.

How can we be more creative?

Start doing more activities that are out of your comfort zone! Try something you've never done before, and you'll be amazed at how many activities cater to your creative curiosities. Start with engaging with the world around you. Being attuned to your environment can allow you to derive inspiration from many different and obscure details. Meditation is also a method that can help you become more at peace within your inner self. This can help you reach the depth of your imagination and it can lower your creative block. Walking around and being at peace with nature can also help to encourage creativity because walking can release endorphins. Endorphins decrease stress and pain levels, and being less stressed can encourage relaxed thinking.

What are its real-world applications?

From coming up with new business models to developing the next robot, creativity is something that we need to rely on to progress as a society. Things like writing your exam paper, empathy, and communication skills are things that creativity is needed for. One prominent everyday example is problem-solving. There are times where we need to compromise on certain situations or find a solution to real-world problems. Creativity allows us to formulate ways to progress and move forward, even when solutions are difficult to find.
