Loneliness

What is it?

Loneliness is defined as an emotional reaction to the feeling of isolation. When we feel like we are alone in every aspect, we can experience loneliness. Loneliness doesn't only pertain to who is around us. You can be in a room full of people and still feel alone. This is why loneliness is considered an emotional response. If you feel as if you have no one to turn to, no one to confide in, or no one that supports you, there's a great chance that you may be lonely.

Why and how does it affect us?

Loneliness can cause problems such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. It can also lead to weight gain or loss, poor heart health, and a weaker immune system. This is partly because loneliness puts a lot of stress on your body. Loneliness can also be a consequence of low self-esteem. Many people often feel lonely if they experience situations in which they feel unwanted or unimportant. If you feel this way, it may be best to consult a doctor or therapist.

How to overcome it

Loneliness is a terrible and traumatic experience to go through, especially because it feels like you are all alone. Here are some tips to help you overcome this feeling.

  • Remember that you aren't alone. Seek help from a counselor or trusted individual.

  • Take care of yourself

  • Try to meet people in unique places

  • Try to find a new hobby, it can possibly lead to new friends

  • Look at the glass half full. It can be hard to stay optimistic, but the best thing you can do is to try to stay positive until things look up!
