Insecurity

What is it?

Insecurity is defined as having a lack of certainty of oneself; lack of confidence. Many people suffer from insecurity one way or another. However, some people have more insecurities and less confidence than most people. No matter your intellect or physical appearance, you can still suffer from low self-esteem. For example, some models feel as if they aren't good enough, despite being looked upon as the beauty standard. Some really intelligent people might think that they aren't smart enough despite being smarter than most. The point is, insecurity can affect anyone, even if you don't think it would.

How does it affect us?

Insecurity is a ball of low self-esteem that is rolled up and thrown at you. Low self-esteem negatively affects the perception you have of yourself. It can make you feel as if you are incapable of achieving or succeeding in certain activities. It can make you doubt your skill level and intelligence. It can make you scared to go out into public because of the fear that people are secretly judging you. Insecurity forces you to put yourself into isolation because of the overwhelming fear you aren't good enough. Insecurity preys on our self-doubt and unfortunately makes us miss out on what could've been amazing memories. Don't let insecurity determine your fate.

Steps to take to gain confidence

Gaining confidence can be pretty hard, and it is a long journey to partake in. Here are some steps to help you along the journey.

  • Be kind to yourself. Don't beat yourself up over mistakes.

  • You will make mistakes. Don't feel like you have to be perfect.

  • Do things you enjoy. Doing things you like will allow you to enjoy some aspects of life better.

  • Celebrate your mini accomplishments. Don't write off victories as insignificant.

  • Stop negatively talking about yourself

  • Stop comparing yourself. Doing this only makes you see the "deficiencies" in yourself.

  • Don't change who you are

  • Think positive thoughts

  • Take care of yourself. Practice good life habits (Sleep, hygiene, eating well, etc.)

  • Fake it 'till you make it.
