What are dogs
Dogs, as we know them today, are a domestic breed of animals that humans take care of. They are mammals with an average lifespan of 12 years, depending on the type. Domestic dogs are a descendant of wolves and were the first species to be domesticated.
Care
Dogs are omnivores and need a balanced diet to stay healthy. Human food isn't usually good for dogs because of the over-saturation of chemicals and the processed nature of human foods. Dogs also need to exercise. Like humans, not enough exercise can lead to health problems that can threaten the lifespan of the dogs. Dogs need to play fetch, go on walks, or play with other humans or dogs in the park. Dogs also need to get enough sleep. 12-14 hours a day is the typical average across dog breeds when it comes to sleep.
Why dogs make us happy
The short answer is that dogs promote the circulation of oxytocin within our bodies. Oxytocin is a chemical hormone that is associated with friendship, empathy, and trust. Having a dog that you love can increase your oxytocin levels which brightens your mood. According to Psychology Today, "Petting dogs not only ups your oxytocin but also lowers your cortisol, the stress hormone. In line with this, studies at the University of New York found that people experienced lower levels of stress when conducting a stressful assignment when they had a pet with them. Studies in workplaces have also shown that taking dogs to work lowers your stress, improves your recovery after challenges, and even increases positive social interactions." Owning a dog can decrease your overall stress levels, which can make you happier in the long run.
